Public Planning Exhibition for Colley Lane
The Canalside in Bridgwater, hosted a public exhibition of the proposed ‘Colley Lane Southern Access Road’ (CLSAR) development last Wednesday. Information about the scale of the new road scheme, and the reasons behind it, were displayed in an easy-to-follow format beginning with the proposed time-scale. Employees of Somerset County Council’s New Highways Scheme were on hand to discuss aspects of the plans with interested local residents. This was prior to the formal planning application due to be submitted in November 2008.
The new road will provide a direct access route for heavy goods vehicles to the Colley Lane Industrial Estate from M5 junction 24, thus diverting high volume traffic from the centre of Bridgwater. The scheme will also improve the access to surrounding areas of the Taunton & Bridgwater Canal , and the River Parrett.
As Project Manager for the scheme, Naomi Gornall said, ‘We believe this is necessary for the inhabitants of the Taunton Road area. At the moment heavy goods vehicles are accessing the Colley Lane Industrial Estate via a residential neighbourhood; this scheme should greatly reduce the volume of traffic by removing the industrial flow.’

Construction of the new access road is due to begin July 2010, subject to planning approval, and the exhibition at the Canalside was an opportunity to gauge public opinion. Somerset County Council Major Schemes Manager, Richard Needs said, 'I feel that the day has gone very well. We have had approximately 150 attendees, which were a mixture of local residents and businesses. The general feedback has been positive with the majority of people expressing that they were in favour of the scheme. The Canalside has been an excellent local venue and all of the staff have been very helpful throughout the day' |
Beulah Jacob, The Canalside’s Business Manager said, ‘We were very happy to host this exhibition, not least as the new road scheme will impact on us as a Conference venue. However, having seen the plans on display today, we are satisfied that the new scheme will provide even better access to our facilities for our customers approaching from the M5.’
